2008.10.26-pumpkins.01.jpgLast weekend we went to the pumpkin patch, well the pumpkin lot, and picked out a couple of good sized pumpkins.  Tonight, we attempted to carve the pumpkins with Ian, however, it didn’t exactly work out the way I thought it would.

He had a blast watching Jesse carve out the hole in the top; so much so that he kept wanting to help hold the pumpkin.  It would have been extremely cute if Jesse wasn’t using a knife at the time.  We finally got to the point where it was time to empty the pumpkin of its guts and Ian wasn’t too sure about what was going on.  We kept having to tell him to stay away from the pumpkin while Daddy was cutting, so he wasn’t about to go running up and dig in.  However, once Jesse showed Ian what to do, fun was had all around.  Ian had a blast pulling the bits out and putting them into the bowl.  I’m not really sure what he was thinking whenever he stuck his hand inside the pumpkin, but he always had the most amusing face.  We’re talking those wide open mouth grins of his.

It got to a point where he loved playing in the guts (we’re saving them for later), but then he started putting them back into the pumpkin.  Now, I can understand his reasoning.   We’ve always told him, If you get something out, then you need to put it back; so he was only doing what we have been trying to teach him.  He got his toys out, now it’s time to put them all away again so he could pull them out again.  Cute, but not really what we were trying to accomplish.

Ian really only helped us with the gut pulling part.  He’s still a little young to use the carving knives, so we waited until after he went to bed to dig those out (Jesse is working on the last one as I type, wait until you see it).

I have to say, I think Ian had a ball with what he did help with and I can’t wait until next year where he should be able to help carve up his own pumpkin.  I have a really cute video of him with the pumpkins, but you’ll have to wait until I go through all of them and figure out which one it is.  Once Jesse gets done with the final pumpkin, and Ian gets into his costume tomorrow night, I’ll take a picture of everything, but for now, I’m going to leave you with these pictures.  If you want to see all of this years pumpkin pictures, then click here.
