Ian and his ice cream

0

2008.08.17-Ia n.01.jpgIan loves his ice cream, there’s never been any questioning that. Especially when it involves chocolate.

Ian has accomplished a few things. First off, we’ve been trying to get it so he doesn’t throw his food at mealtime, so we started something new and it seems to be working really well. Instead of putting him in his booster, he now sits at the table in the chair, just like mama and daddy. No booster or any kind of height adjustment. He’s not belted in and he’s able to get up whenever he wants to. Since we started having him sit in the chair normally, he really hasn’t thrown food. It’s been awesome. He’s not entirely clean about eating yet, but neither am I and I’ve had years of practice. We had noticed that he started throwing his food when he was done, so now, instead of throwing anything, he just gets up. We’ll have to break him of leaving the table whenever he wants to later, but that’s so much more acceptable than having him throw food to let us know he’s done.

Speaking of dinner, we found out that Ian likes peas and pork chops. We’re starting to get a little tired of chicken and beef all the time, so I picked up some pork chops yesterday and we grilled up some tonight. Ian devoured the chops and didn’t leave a single piece behind. The same goes for the peas as well. I think I ended up giving him 5-6 spoonfuls of peas and he ate them all like candy. It was amusing watching him continuously popping them into his mouth.

We’re also starting to realize that he’s a lot taller than before. Ian is now able to reach stuff on the countertops, even though he can’t see what he’s reaching for. He’s already pulled down one pie, so we’re being a little more careful with what we’re keeping close to the edge.

Something else amusing, and irritating, is Ian knows where his favorite foods are. Namely the chocolate chip ahoys and oreos. If we have any in the house, they are usually in the small travel containers that you can buy and they get left out on the counter. Well, Ian has started pulling me into the kitchen and taking me to the counter and wanting to be lift up. Once I do, he starts pointing to things he wants. I played with him a little tonight by picking up everything but what I knew he wanted and each time he told me NO and kept asking for what he wants. We’re starting to hide his snacks now because I don’t want him to continually eat and not eat at mealtimes. However, this is making it nice to figure out when he’s hungry because he will pull me into the kitchen and either point at the counter or at the table. I can ask him if he is hungry and he’ll shake his head yes at me.

Have I mentioned that he is comprehending a lot right now? You can ask him a question and he’ll know to give you an answer. Granted, the answer will more than likely be NO right now, but he’s understanding that a response is necessary. We can also have him to find something or go get something and he knows exactly what we’re talking about.

He’s also obsessed with counting right now. He’ll walk around the house or point at things saying 1-2. That’s it. It’s just 1-2, but for 18 months, that is really good.

Ian’s 1st Big Boy Cup

I found some cups for Ian that are not sippy cups. They have little straws built into the sides, so while it doesn’t have a lid, it’s still a good cup to teach Ian with. This was his first use.

Ian and a laptop

It was Jesse’s laptop and as soon as Jesse left the room, Ian pulled himself up on the couch so he could start “using” it. It was so cute, he even pulled the laptop onto his lap.

Bye Bye

This one is a little older, taken while we were still at the apartment, but it has Ian waving bye bye to Jesse and saying bye bye as well.

Ian has been loving the sprinkler…

Draccus has been a lot more stabler lately, so I’m going to start uploading more videos. I probably won’t upload all of them, but I’ll get a select few up. As we take more videos, they’ll start popping up again.

Ian is starting to get more words in his vocabulary. Of course, you have to know what you’re hearing in order to understand him, but he has been saying “cup”, “no”, “thank you”, and “what’s this”. He’s not talking yet, but he’s getting there. However, his understanding is so good at the moment. At least for his age. I can ask him to go get his cup and he’ll get it. Even if it isn’t in the same room. The same goes for his shoes and random other things. He may not be able to say what they are, but he knows what is what.

He’s been catching the idea on a lot of things as well. For one, he’s understands that the toilet paper goes into the toilet. I’ve already fished out an entire (new) roll of toilet paper out of the toilet and he doesn’t try to take it anywhere else, but he’ll put it in the toilet…whether you’re sitting on it or not. :)

We’re slowly starting to potty train Ian (FYI Grandparents!). We have been introducing the potty seat to him for awhile now, but we’re actually going to give it a try. I’m sure it’s going to take awhile, but we’re hoping he’ll take to it.

There was something else I was going to say, but I can’t remember what it was. Ian does have 3 new molars now, which explains the crabbiness of the last week or so. I think the pain is done for the moment, though, since I haven’t had to give him any teething tablets. He still knows what those are and now where they are. He can’t get to them, but he can drag me over and point them out (which is his new thing).

Ian definitely knows what he wants. He’s starting to drag people to where he wants them and then asking to be picked up so he can reach something. It’s been nice because I know when he wants something to snack on, however, he knows where the oreos are generally kept and makes a beeline straight for them. If he doesn’t get what he wants, then he goes into a tantrum. They don’t bother me, but Jesse doesn’t have as much patience as I do. :)

Speaking of patience, Ian is a little monster at the dinner table and we’ve started trying to fix that. He likes to throw his food around and it’s really getting on our nerves (not that it hasn’t been for awhile now), so Ian is starting to get punished a little more. I really don’t feel comfortable taking his food away from him for the rest of the night, so we’ve been spanking him and putting him in his pack and play (which is in our bedroom) for a few minutes (which he crys through) and then bringing him back out. When he comes back out, his food isn’t in front of him, but it’s not far. Not sure if its working or not, but since we’ve started it, he seems to be doing better. I’ve also noticed that he has been doing a lot better since we have him sitting in a chair and not in his booster. I don’t know what it is about the chairs, he’s closer to his food maybe, but he seems to eat more. He still gets food off his plate, but there isn’t as much ending up on the floor. Maybe I’m wrong, but that is what it seems like.

Hello!

Molars

0

So Ian’s first molar broke through the other day- that might explain why he’s been such a brat the last few days. I think they are more on the way- he woke up twice last night screaming bloody murder.

Hurray for children’s motrin.

I’ll try and snag a picture of it if I can get him to hold still later.

Another Day at the Park

0

2008.08.08-Ian.02.jpgToday Ian and I walked to a park that is pretty close for us and I made a decision, we’re going to go over there every morning. I mean, why not. It’s not that far away, just on the other side of the church and it’ll get both of us outside for a bit. Ian loves climbing all over things and I would rather have him do it outside, then all over the furniture. So we’re going to try and go every morning and then we’ll come back for lunch and his nap. The park is actually really nice since it’s pretty much shaded all the time (well, I think it is based on the tree locations since I haven’t been there in the afternoon yet. I haven’t determined yet if we’re going to go back up there yet this afternoon, but I’m seriously considering it.
