2nd Birthing Class

2

Last night Jesse and I went to our 2nd birthing class. During class, we learned the difference between inducing labor and augmenting labor as well as the process of a Cesarean delivery. It doesn’t sound like we’ll have to worry about having a c-section since Doc Z says Ian is on the smaller size and I doubt we’ll induce since Ian is getting impatient to arrive.

We also went on a tour of the birthing center at the hospital. It’s not bad. What amazed me the most was the fact that the hospital keeps the babies with mom at all times. I mean, there is a nursery, but it’s there in case the mother needs some time. It’s used more as a newborn day care than anything. Baby and Mother share a room. That’s awesome! The nursery is there as an option if mommy needs to have some time to herself and for the initial bath. This is also where Ian will receive his first bath and family members can watch the process through the window.

Another excellent fact is the security the hospital uses on the babies. There are always stories about telling how babies were switched at birth or someone was able to walk out the door with one; however, the hospital has a system where both mother and baby are given bands that work with each other. When baby is near mother, the band will play a lullaby. If the baby goes near the exits, then the exits are locked and no one can get in or out. If a baby goes near another mother, than there is a siren/buzzer that goes off.

I also found out that I will be in the hospital for about 2 days. I’m not sure how many nights I’ll be there; it all depends on when Ian makes his appearance (i.e. if he is born early in the morning compared to evening/night).

We also talked a little about birth plans last night. As of right now, Jesse and I really haven’t discussed any kind of birth plan. We’re going to have to take a look at that.

35 Week Update: 5 weeks & counting

Just got back from the doctors and everything is still going good. Ian’s heartrate was about 138 beats per minute, so he’s still going strong. We learned that he’s gaining about an ounce per day now and he should be about 5 lbs. Doc Z is still saying that Ian is on the small side, meaning he shouldn’t be a big baby, but he shouldn’t have a problem making his appearance. I mentioned last week that Doc Z was surprised by my cervix and it seems that it is still progressing. Doc Z thinks Ian will be a week early and he mentioned that he wouldn’t be surprised if Ian was born at the end of the month. So it doesn’t look like we’ll have a mid-March baby, but an early-March/late-February birthday.

I gained three lbs this week, but chocolate pudding/ice cream/cookies were sounding good this week. Overall, everything is still going strong and both of us are good.
